Mattheis said his goal was to be proactive and have the masks for prevention. In a handful of cases around the state, he said, oxygen can help a pet rescued from a fire recover more quickly.

Invisible Fence of Western Pennsylvania is donating an animal rescue oxygen kit to the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department in Cecil Township.

John Mozdzien of Invisible Fence Brand of Western Pennsylvania delivered two kits Monday containing six oxygen masks, along with bandages and other first-aid pet materials, as a donation to the department Monday night.

"All our guys have dogs and cats at home," Gaston Fire Chief Roger Mesenbrink said of his firefighters. "I personally have dogs, so trust me, we all know how important this is."

But one small silver lining has been the animals rescued from the building.  Firefighters saved one dog and three cats from the burning structure.

Kansas has three formal search and rescue dog K-9 organizations; two of them regularly train at Crisis City. K-9 Search and Rescue of Kansas, Inc. coordinated this donation for Crisis City. Invisible Fence previously donated K-9 mask kits to the Wichita Fire Department and Ford County Fire Department.

“He was trying to gasp for air,” said Adam Justus, assistant chief of the Henderson County Rescue Squad. “Soot was coming out of its mouth and nose.”

Two months ago, Kitty might not have survived. On March 5, however, Henderson County Rescue Squad members used a pet oxygen mask they had recently received through Invisible Fence's Project Breathe program.

“It was really important to us that every fire district within the Cheektowaga area received a mask,” said Tony Hettinger, Project Breathe’s director. “These pet oxygen mask kits are the difference between saving a pet’s life or not.”

Spieler said that countless times throughout his career in the volunteer fire service he has seen pets rescued only for the firefighters not to have the proper equipment outside to further help.

“We feel if we can save someone’s pet even though their home is destroyed, it helps in the rebuilding process,” Spieler said.

These kits often times are the difference between saving a pets life or not in a fire.

The pet masks can be used on dogs and cats as well as other small animals. They can also be washed and reused.

Saturday marked the second time that firefighters with the Bradenville-based township fire department have used the pet oxygen masks to treat smoke inhalation.

After the Browns were removed from the apartment, firefighters were doing a secondary search when firefighter Daniel Tufts spotted a cat, barely alive. He, along with firefighter Adam Gatti, grabbed a special Pet Oxygen Kit that contains special masks for animals.

Fire officials said Bosco was in the living room where the fire started. Barringer said the dog was lying inside a crate, and he carried both dog and crate outside.

"These specialty masks make such a difference in whether an animal's life can be saved."

Invisible Fence was recognized for its contribution of pet oxygen masks for Pickering's fire trucks. Each kit contains reusable masks sized for animals, since animals are also susceptible to health risks posed by a fire.

"Having your house damaged by fire is traumatic enough, Petito said. "Losing a beloved pet makes the situation worse."

Cornils said the donations are part of Project Breathe, and she would like to get oxygen masks to all departments in the Treasure Valley.

"So many times an animal will wake someone up because they're the first to notice something is wrong," she said. "When a dog alerts their owner of a fire, it saves lives. So if we can do something to save those pets, we will."

“We hope that by donating oxygen mask kits that we will contribute to saving more pets and hopefully protect pet owners that may risk their own life to save a pet in a fire,” said Dan Kelley, owner, Invisible Fence of the Southern Tier.

"Things can be replaced, but you can never get over the loss of a family member - two-legged or four-legged."

Tiny was breathing a little easier Friday. If it weren't for Central York firefighters, the small shih tzu wouldn't be breathing at all. The five-year-old dog was pulled out of a smoke-filled bedroom on the second floor of a Bray Circle townhouse, in the Leslie St. and Davis Dr. area of Newmarket by a nieghbour.

Firefighters rescued the family dog from the structure and were able to resuscitate him by using the pet oxygen mask.
